Are you affected by the volume of traffic on Sierra Morena Road and Boulevard?

There are approximately 20,000 cars a day travelling on these roads. 80% of them are not residents and travel through from Richmond Road or Westhills to communities west of us. This on a road designed for less than 10,000.

We need to do something to address this. We need your support to show the city just how big an issue the traffic is.

If you are concerned about this traffic, send an email to us here include your name and address, so we know who you are and how you are affected. Feel free to connect with our Alderman Richard Pootmans on this issue as well, he can be reached  here

By sending us an email, this will allow us to update you on the steps we are taking with the city and province to get the problem fixed.

Traffic update June 2011:

The major challenge in the community continues to be the excessive number of vehicles short-cutting through the neighbourhood, creating safety and livability issues for the residents.

The traffic situation is worsening day by day as the city grows in the West. Average daily traffic on the Sierra Morena Blvd / Rd has now climbed to 21,000 as per City. Traffic on these residential roads is now more than that on the multi-lane commercial roads such as 4th St or 6th Ave in downtown Calgary.

Last year traffic committee publicized the SM Blvd / Rd situation in the media and hosted traffic forum prior to the aldermanic elections to spread the awareness and to seek commitment from candidates on alleviating the situation. We have also raised our voice against further increase in the traffic volume due to changes in the West LRT bus routes and Rockford condo developments in Richmond Hill.

The other major traffic related complaint we have from concerned parents in the community is the excessive speed of cars on the community roads in general and mainly around the school. SHCA has requested City for better pedestrian cross walk signs and sought the help from RCMP in patrolling and enforcement against speeding cars from time to time.

The SHCA traffic committee is working actively with the administration to explore alternatives for the above issues. We are yet to see any positive change in the situation. Alderman Pootmans has committed to push the issue inside the City administration. He has informed that the City has now included the road through the Sarcee Yard in the future TIIP (Transportation Infrastructure Investment Plan) priority list and would request City to explore other measures in the interim.

If traffic situation is not fixed it could lead to other administrative and social problems which could also spread to other areas of the community. We encourage all residents to take active interest in the well being of our community by being vocal about these issues and reminding our area representatives in the City and Province to take action. Don't take NO as the answer ... squeaky wheels will have to be greased ...
